Don Paul Selected for Donald R. Paul has been selected as 2008 recipient of the Founders Award sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). This award recognizes outstanding contributions in the chemical engineering field. The award is presented to a member of AIChE who has had an important impact on chemical engineering and whose achievements, either specific or general, have advanced this profession in any of its aspects. The award recognizes Professor Paul’s distinguished record of service to the profession, including both technical and professional activities. Professor Paul holds the Ernest Cockrell, Sr. Chair in Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin and is director of the Texas Materials Institute at the university. In addition, he has been involved in CLiPS (the NSF Center for Layered Polymeric Systems) since its inception and is the site director for CLiPS activities at the University of Texas. Professor Paul is also the recipient of the ACS Award in Applied Polymer Science (1984), among other honors, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His research in polymers focuses on blends or alloys, composites and nanocomposites, barrier properties and the use of membranes for separations. He describes the primary goal of his research as relating the properties or behavior to the molecular structure of the polymer or developing the basis for "molecular engineering" of polymers to achieve a desired result.
